Where the HELL is my Ceton InfiniTV 4?!

I've been working to create a one screen household. My main computer monitor is my 52 inch HDTV. The final piece of this progress is to move regular television watching to my computer, that way I won't have to keep switching between sources. I already watch Blu-Ray and DVD's from my computer which is great. Since I work from home so much, I can take a break to watch a film, and Outlook will pop up a notice window any time e-mail comes in.

Also, the reason why more people aren't watching web series is because they just aren't used to the usage flow. What better way than to consolidate everything, including DVR functionality to my computer.

After much research, the Ceton InfiniTV 4 looked to be the best choice. While it is a bit of overkill, being able to record 4 HD shows simultaneously, and the price tag is a significant $400 to do what my cable box does, it still had all the features that I was looking for.

  • Able to tune multiple HD streams
  • Multi-Stream CableCARD support (a unit you rent from your cable provider for dollars a month so you can unscramble their premium channels)
  • No set-top-box (plug directly into computer)

So after some debate I decided to pull the trigger. I made my purchase online from Fluid Digital, and ran out to buy a new terabyte hard drive to dedicate to recorded video. That was in August. Here I am, 3 months later, and I'm still sitting here with the proverbial fork and knife in my hand, napkin tucked into my shirt, salivating over a card that hasn't come yet.

Evidently there is a parts shortage that has held up production for months. Some people have been waiting since April. There are only 3 distributors, Fluid Digital, Cannon PC and Zones.com, and they are all in the same boat.

While this has been disappointing, I figure it's the price of being "cutting edge," and I don't feel like getting something in the interim that will just become junk. I try to keep my equipment load as lean as possible. I'm hoping that in the end the adage, "Good things come to those who wait" will be more true than "There's a sucker born every minute." Fingers crossed, I'll let you know what happens.
